Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, is a commonly occurring type of eye infection. It consists of redness and inflammation of the membranes covering the whites of the eyes and the membranes on the inner part of the eyelid. These membranes are very sensitive and react to a variety of bacteria, viruses, allergy-provoking agents, irritants, toxic agents, and underlying diseases in the body.
Conjunctivitis exists in both viral and bacterial forms. It is common during childhood but can occur at any age. There are many causes of pinkeye. Depending on the cause, pinkeye is classified as either infectious or noninfectious.
A viral infection is the leading cause of pinkeye. Viral symptoms are generally associated with a watery discharge that is neither green nor yellow in color. In addition, cold symptoms such as stuffed up sinuses or a runny nose are present. If an individual has pinkeye, they may experience swollen eyelids and pain when looking at bright lights. Viral pinkeye does not always require an antibiotic but it is still a good idea to see a doctor. This is because the viral form of pinkeye is frequently associated with an infection of the cornea. Viral pinkeye is highly contagious.
Bacterial pinkeye is caused mainly by three forms of bacteria: staphylococci, pneumococci, and streptococci bacterium. When an individual has bacterial pinkeye, the symptoms include eye pain, swelling, redness, and a moderate to large amount of discharge. This discharge is generally yellow or greenish in color.
