Why AMO is to Blame for Incidences of Acanthamoeba Keratitis
Although American Medical Optics (AMO) denies any wrong doing on their part, the recall of their Complete MoisturePlus contact solution has left everyone involved wondering – who's to blame? The announcement of the recall back on May 25, 2007 did little to ease consumer's growing concerns about the health of their eyes. Incidences of Acanthamoeba keratitis began to be reported and the link was quickly made between people suffering from the infection and users of Complete MoisturePlus. AMO states that "there is no evidence to suggest that today's voluntary recall is related to a product contamination issue…", however, they later state that out of 39 soft contact wearers, 21 reported using Complete MoisturePlus contact solution. Furthermore, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that it is seven times more likely for someone to develop Acanthamoeba keratitis if they were users of AMO's Complete Moisture Plus.
Other sources show that AMO may have known about the possible link between the development of Acanthamoeba keratitis and Complete MoisturePlus solution as far back as 2004. From May 2003 to September 2006, a doctor from the University of Illinois worked with other doctors to treat 35 patients who exhibited the Acanthamoeba keratitis infection. Of these 35 patients, 55% of those with the infection were infected due to the use of AMO's Complete MoisturePlus contact solution.
AMO stands behind its product and places the blame on consumers who "improperly store, disinfect, or handle" their contact lenses. The CDC found the risk to be high enough that it forced AMO to recall their Complete MoisturePlus contact solution. AMO promoted its product to healthcare professionals as well as consumers, giving the impression that Complete MoisturePlus contact solution was a "highly effective against the introduction of common ocular microorganisms." AMO knew that their product was ineffective in preventing growth of microorganisms, such as "acnthameoba", yet did nothing about it until cases of the infection were reported.
