Vision Problems: Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a medical condition found mainly among elderly adults. In this disease, the center of the inner lining of the eye suffers thinning, atrophy, and even bleeding. These conditions result in a loss of central vision and an inability to see fine details, to read, or to recognize faces. Macular degeneration is recognized as being the leading cause of blindness for those over fifty years old.

While there are forms of macular degeneration that affect younger people, in most cases, people are generally referring to Age Related Macular Degeneration. This condition has a variety of risk factors that make some people more prone to the condition than others. Age is the top risk factor. Ten percent of all patients between the ages of 66 and 74 will have findings of macular degenerations. This increases to thirty percent among people ages 75 to 85.

A family history of macular degeneration also makes people more prone to the condition. Individuals with a family history are four times more likely to be affected by macular degeneration than individuals who don’t have a family history of the condition.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and high fat intake also play a role in whether or not a person is affected by macular degeneration. Exposure to sunlight, particularly blue rays, is believed to be a cause of the condition by some while other experts do not believe this to be true.

The symptoms of macular degeneration include blurred vision, a slow return of vision capabilities after exposure to bright light, central scotomas (shadows or dark areas of vision), and trouble discerning colors.
