Disposable Contact Lenses

Disposable contact lenses are viewed by the eye care industry to be the best of both worlds when it comes to balancing comfort, convenience, and eye health. They were introduced in 1987 and are designed to be worn for a specific amount of time before being thrown away and replaced by a new pair. They are currently the most commonly worn type of contact lens. In addition to being favored by eye care practitioners, they are favored by consumers.

There are three main categories of lenses that are designed to be thrown out: disposable lenses, frequent replacement lenses, and traditional (reusable) lenses. Disposable lenses are designed to be replaced after a maximum of two weeks of wear. Frequent replacement lenses are supposed to be replaced either monthly or quarterly. They should not be worn for more than 3 months before a new pair is opened. Traditional, or reusable lenses, are designed to be replaced once every 6 months. It is sometimes common for them not to be replaced for a year.

When the term “disposable” is used, it is frequently used in reference to both disposable and frequent replacement lenses. As a general rule, the more a person replaces his or her lenses, the healthier and happier that person’s eyes will be. For starters, proteins, calcium, and lipids all build up on the lens with time. These deposits all contribute to eye irritation. In addition, these deposits make the eyes more prone to infections.

Daily disposable lenses are thrown out when they are removed after one day of wear. They are then replaced with a new pair the next morning. These lenses combine convenience and health into one lens. They are convenient because they never need to be cleaned. They are healthy because there is no day-to-day deposit build up. Also, because people don’t sleep in these lenses, there is no increased risk of eye problems.
