Glaucoma
The eye is subject to a number of diseases that will interfere with a person's ability to see. One of the most serious is glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that affect the optic nerve which result in the loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern of optic neuropathy. One of the most significant risk factors for developing glaucoma is higher, or raised, intraocular pressure. Basically, this means that a person with high eye pressure is at risk for developing glaucoma.
While one person may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, another may have high eye pressure for years and never develop damage. If glaucoma goes untreated, it leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and loss of the visual field. This can progress to full blindness.
Glaucoma has been called the "sneak thief of sight" because of how gradual the loss of the visual field is. This loss occurs gradually over a long period of time and frequently is only recognized or noticed when it has already become quite advanced. Once the field is lost, it cannot be recovered. Globally, glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness. One out of every 200 people under the age of 50 and one in 10 people over 80 are affected by glaucoma.
The largest risk factor in most cases of glaucoma is ocular hypertension. In some populations, however, only 50% of patients with primary open angle glaucoma have elevated ocular pressure. Like all diseases, glaucoma affects some populations more than others. Individuals of African descent are three times more likely to develop primary open angle glaucoma. The other big risk factors are older age, thinner corneal thickness, and myopia. People who have a family history of glaucoma have about a one in six chance of developing glaucoma.
