Corneal Scratches
Injuries to the cornea are the most common type of eye injuries. The cornea is the clear, protective “window” at the front of the eye. It can be injured when it comes in contact with:
- Dust
- Dirt
- Sand
- Wood shavings
- Metal particles
- The edge of a piece of paper
- Even a contact lens
These foreign bodies are capable of scratching or cutting the cornea. In most cases, the scratch is minor and is called a corneal abrasion. While they are minor, they can still become infected and result in a corneal ulcer. This is a serious problem.
A number of daily activities can lead to corneal abrasions. Playing sports, home repairs, or roughhousing with kids can all result in eye injuries. Splash accidents, another common injury, bring chemicals into contact with the eyes which can result in a corneal abrasion or burn.
The cornea is extremely sensitive and so abrasions can be painful. If the cornea is scratched, it may feel like there is sand in the eye. Tears, blurred vision, increased sensitivity, or redness around the eyes are all common symptoms of corneal abrasions. A headache may even be possible.
In the event of a serious injury or an abrasion that shows signs of infection, it is very important to seek out medical attention immediately. In the event that a foreign body gets into the eye, there are a few immediate steps to take to prevent a serious injury or remove the foreign body. They include:
- Rinsing the eye with clean water or saline solution
- Blinking repeatedly
- Pulling the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid
There are a number of actions that can aggravate the injury. They include:
- Attempting to remove an object that is embedded in the eyeball
- Rubbing the eye after an injury occurs
- Touching the eyeball with tweezers, cotton balls, a cotton swab, or any other object
